John Challis was prevented from becoming the Head as a result of the opposition by one of the ABC Commissioners due to a church matter involving John Challis.
The ABC Commissioner was Sir Bernard Callinan. ( 1977-1983). Back in the 1950s Bernard Callinan was a close associate of B.A. Santamaria. Challis and others clashed with B.A.Santamaria and his supporters with respect to the tactics used by Bob Santamaria within the ALP.
Sir Bernard Callinan
What is publicly known about Sir Bernard Callinan? A reading of Who's Who in Australia for 1988 , page 168 reveals some of the following:
The above record indicates that Bernard Callinan was a good Church school product and activist. One can only imagine what other affairs on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, he could or would have interfered with in what he believed was in the interest of his church. If he would and could so blatantly interfere in ABC affairs in the interests of his political and religious connections what other areas did he influence in the same manner?
Key Australian Founding Fathers wanted as many children as possible from all religious backgrounds to attend public school in order to reduce the chance of church school products like Callinan acting in the interests of an ingrained tribalism created by a church school system.
In 1983 seven Victorian Bishops attributed the social mobility of Roman Catholics in Australian society as follows:
"Over the last fifty years Catholic teachers, both religious and lay, have enabled huge numbers of their students to achieve a degree of social mobility which has not been bettered anywhere in the western world."
They have only accounted for social mobility in terms of educational qualifications. However, the mobility of this particular section of the Australian community can also be attributed to a vast employment network, wheels within wheels. Please the Bernard Callinans and your career is assured.
There are many areas where research would indicate wheels within wheels behind the social mobility of a select group of the Australian community : LaTrobe University; RMIT; The Age; the University of Melbourne Education Department; Victoria University; the Victorian Education Department ; together with both Federal and State bureaucracies.
In the next year DOGS plan to reveal the methods through which the Church looks after its interests and those of its tribe. Look forward to the story of the career of Sir John Vincent Dillon who ended up as Under Secretary to the Chief Secretary's Department (Sir Arthur Rylah)
