PRESS RELEASE 659#

MARK SCOTT TO HEAD THE NSW EDUCATION DEPARTMENT-

WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE IN OR COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC EDUCATION

Mark Scott , the former managing director of the ABC, has been appointed by the New South Wales government as head of the Education Department.

He replaces Dr Michele Bruniges and will be responsible for 2000 schools, 49,000 teachers and 790,000 students in public schools in that State.

Scott did not attend public schools, and has never worked in them. His wife is the Principal of a wealthy Sydney North Shore girls school - Wenona. DOGS do not consider he has the necessary qualifications for the job. He is neither committed in word or deed to the public system.

According to Wikipedia Scott was born in 1962 in Los Angeles. He holds dual Australian and United States citizenship

Educated at Knox Grammar School, Scott worked for the New South Wales Greiner Liberal government, as chief of staff to the Education Minister, Virginia Chadwick, and as a senior adviser to education minister, Terry Metherell.

The article in The Guardian on his appointment has been met with some interesting comments:

Stephen Saunders said:

Hi, Mark. The national plan to cripple public schooling has a carrot and a stick. The carrot is the $10bn federal slush fund for god schools. The stick – your new job- is to ensure that state schools woefully under-provide for self-evident and predictable population growth. Too easy!

Anthony Nolan Stereophonic wrote:

He proved totally unable to defend the public broadcaster and has now been installed so he can do the same thing for public education.

Sounds like a job for one of the boys. Pretty tight incestuous bunch our politicians and senior public servants. Just another example of how well our democracy works. May as well be an outpost in sub Saharan Africa. Same dea
