AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE DEFENCE OF GOVERNMENT

SCHOOLS - D.O.G.S.

PRESS RELEASE 158#.

20 July 2006

GOOGLE  STILL A PROBLEM FOR ANYBODY  WISHING TO FIND THE AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE DEFENCE OF GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS ON THE "PAGES FROM AUSTRALIA" SEARCH ENGINE

WHY?

DOGS has already addressed the above "Google"  problem in an earlier Press Release - No. 117# - and invited visitors to assist us with any explanation.

One suggestion given to us by a visitor to our site was that "Pages from Australia" really meant any web page that contained the abbreviation "au" in the webpage address.

DOGS acted on this person's suggestion and purchased a new domain site namely www.adogs.org.au . Unfortunately this procedure failed to solve the "Google " problem.  However we decided to have a look at "Pages from Australia" with the collocation of words, "Defence of Government Schools". Very interestingly, on 19 July 2006, when we did this we discovered that the sixth result in the listed result referred to the web page www.womenaustralia.info/ . So our helpful visitor was mistaken. Our web address is not the problem. Something else is wrong!

Please note that DOGS do not have this problem with other search engines such as Altavista and Yahoo. But we do have it with "Google". Seeing that :Google" is supposed to be one of the leading search engines, we expect  Australians looking for Australian pages to find them as easily,-  as they do on the "Google" worldwide web search as well as on the other search engines.

The current situation on the "Google" Australian Pages web search discriminates against Australian researchers expecting to find material researched and produced by the DOGS on their website.

DOGS have made an interesting comparison between the "Google" "Pages from Australia' and those on the :World Wide Web". Consider the results of the following word searches conducted on 20 July 2006:

  • "Church and State" and "Australia" (DOGS website address appeared  No 12 on the list for the world wide web but was not discovered  on the Australian pages

  • "Promotion of Public Education" (DOGS website address appeared No 5 on the list for the world wide web but was not discovered on the Australian pages.

  • "Cancer in the Body Politic" (DOGS website address appeared No 1 and No 2 on the list for the world wide web but was not amongst the 6 listed on the Australian pages.

  • "Peter Dawkins" and "Education" ( DOGS  website address appeared No 1 and No 2 on the list for the world wide web but was not discovered on the Australian pages.

  • "Secular Provision" and "Australia" (DOGS website address appeared No 1 and No 2 on the list for the world wide web but was not discovered in the 3 listed on the Australian pages)

DOGS are wondering whether our readers/visitors have any other suggestions because to date we have no satisfaction from "Google". Should we try again?
