The Rank and File of Victorian Teachers have had Enough
Funding Protest Special
The Rank and File of Victorian public school teachers have had enough.
Labor Governments at both the Federal and State level are big on promises and lacking in execution.
According to the Age on May 12, 2025, and reproduced by Parents Victoria on the same day, at https://www.parentsvictoria.asn.au/victorian-government-cut-2-4bn-from-school-funding/
the state government secretly ripped $2.4 billion from state schools after delaying by three years its commitment to provide the funding required to pay for the long-promised Gonski education reforms.
The decision was taken despite Education Minister Ben Carroll warning Premier Jacinta Allan and then-treasurer Tim Pallas it would damage the state’s reputation, embed Victoria’s status as Australia’s lowest funder of public schools, and prolong disadvantage and inequities across the school system.
This cut also ‘flowed on’ to a reduction in matched funding from the Federal Government.
According to the article ‘Victoria’s altered funding trajectory for state schools means that instead of delivering a steady uplift of between $100 million and $200 million a year, funding will stay flat until 2029.’
Meanwhile,
New figures obtained from the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) show that 50 private schools serving the richest families in Victoria raked in nearly $150 million in 2023 from donations, investment income and other income. Shockingly, this money is ignored by government when determining taxpayer funding of these schools. See https://saveourschools.com.au/?s=victoria
The result is now being felt at the school level by overworked, underpaid public school teachers.
So – they are out, about and protesting. Their first protest two weeks ago at Heidelberg, outside the electoral office of Anthony Carbines was very effective, and has been covered in the DOGS program on 3CR at https://www.3cr.org.au/dogs/episode/funding-protest-special
