PRESS RELEASE 559#

VICTORIA OPEN FOR BUSINESS: PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR SALE

The Napthine Government, with Education Minister Dixon ( who has private schools in his DNA)  are busy selling off, not only public school property, but our children’s inheritance. According to the Age, Wednesday July 9, 2014 they have sold  State school sites netting the government more than $128 m.

There is no guarantee that this money will be channelled back into education and the building of new schools in developing areas. This represents an abdication of basic ministerial responsibility for the provision of public education and accountability for public assets.

The Labor government closed  several State schools which hadenrolments greater than many private schools, but it is the Napthine government, that is selling them off to developers.  For example, the Clayton West school with its 2. 04 hectare site which has been sold to a developer for townhouses, will be full of families with children. And where will these children go to school?

Other schools that have been sold are:

  1. Brandon Park Secondary College ($47.5 million plus GST),
  2. Monash special school ($11.2 million plus GST),
  3. Monash Secondary College ($6.15 million plus GST) and
  4. Western Heights Secondary ($6.55 million plus GST).
